Sam Houston State University

Through the Correspondence Course Division, Sam Houston State University provides the opportunity for qualified individuals to obtain college credit through correspondence course study.

Correspondence courses offer a challenging and rewarding opportunity to earn credit for college courses without attending an organized class. Students may study at their own rate and at the time and place of their choosing. This service has been proven highly beneficial for those who desire to continue their college work, to teachers who wish to take courses leading to additional certification or who are in need of additional study in the disciplines they teach, and to citizens who wish to broaden their learning.

Unless otherwise specified, each correspondence course carries three semester hours of college credit and includes an amount of work similar to that required for a course taken in residence.

Correspondence courses are not offered at the graduate level, nor can any correspondence course taken at any level or at any institution count toward a graduate degree at Sam Houston State University.

“Sam Houston State University is accredited by the Commission of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097; Telephone number 404.679.4501) to award bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees.”

Important

Semester credit hours earned in a correspondence course(s) are not considered “resident classroom instruction” hours and are not used in determining the minimum semester credit hour requirement (see NOTE below) for academic honors: Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, Summa Cum Laude, Dean’s List, and Presidents Honor Roll.

However, the semester credit hours and grade points earned for correspondence courses are included in the calculation of the overall grade point average.

Correspondence courses are not offered at the graduate level, nor can any correspondence course be taken at any level at any institution count toward a graduate degree at Sam Houston State University.

Note

Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, Summa Cum Laude: minimum of 32 semester hours in residence (resident classroom instruction).  Dean’s List, President’s Honor Roll: enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours (not including correspondence course hours) for a semester.

Quality of Work Submitted for Correspondence Courses

The answers to all lessons, tests, or examinations submitted by each student for grading and/or credit in a correspondence course must be his/her own work. Failure to submit original work and/or to follow the aforementioned rules and regulations may result in dis-enrollment from the course without credit.

The use of abusive, indecent, profane, or vulgar language, which by its very nature is offensive to others, will not be tolerated in any correspondence coursework submitted by students. Any such occurrence may be grounds for dis-enrollment from a correspondence course without credit.

To receive credit by correspondence, locate a course that interests you or fits your needs, Registration for the course(s), pay tuition, receive and submit completed, self-paced coursework to us, apply for the final exam, and complete the exam. See Policies and Procedures under Enrollment Procedures and Submitting Your Lessons.
